The event was presided over by Mr. Do Duc Duy, Member of the Party Central Committee and Minister of MONRE.
Among those in attendance were Mr. Nguyen Khac Than, Secretary of the Thai Binh Provincial Party Committee; Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Chairman of the Thai Binh People's Committee; Ms. Ramla Khalidi, UNDP Vietnam’s Resident Representative; along with leaders of MONRE-affiliated units, provincial officials, and numerous local residents from Thai Thuy District.
In his opening remarks, Minister Do Duc Duy emphasized that, amid growing environmental pollution and climate change challenges, tree planting, forest conservation, and sustainable development have become increasingly vital. Trees contribute to nature conservation, biodiversity protection, environmental improvement, disaster mitigation, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthening climate resilience. This also lays the foundation for promoting the country’s sustainable development.
According to Minister Do Duc Duy, in 2025, MONRE and Thai Binh Province chose the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve—a site of special significance in the conservation of coastal wetland biodiversity—to host the launching ceremony and celebrate World Wetlands Day. The event highlights the vital role of communities in protecting wetland ecosystems, aiming for a world where people can benefit from the life-sustaining services that nature provides.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Chairman of the Thai Binh People's Committee, underscored the importance of wetland ecosystems in biodiversity conservation and ensuring a healthy living environment. He called on individuals, organizations, and agencies to actively participate in tree planting, afforestation, environmental protection, climate change adaptation, and sustainable development of mangrove ecosystems. He urged, "Every individual, household, and organization should actively contribute to a greener, more sustainable Thái Bình by planting and caring for trees."
Ms. Ramla Khalidi, UNDP Vietnam’s Resident Representative, expressed her pride in collaborating with Thai Binh Province to establish the Thai Thuy Wetland Nature Reserve. She emphasized that this initiative serves as a clear demonstration that Vietnam can achieve economic growth without compromising the environment. She reaffirmed, "UNDP remains committed to being a trusted partner of Vietnam in nature conservation, wetland protection, and climate change response."
On this occasion, MONRE and its partners donated 10,000 trees, including native species such as kandelia obovata sheue and sonneratia caseolaris, which are well adapted to the soil, climate, and natural conditions of the Thai Thuy wetland area. At the ceremony, 300 kandelia obovata sheue trees and 1,000 sonneratia caseolaris trees were planted, with the remaining trees to be planted in the coming days, depending on weather conditions and tides, ensuring completion before March 30, 2025.
