
Vietnam - South Korea: Implementing comprehensive cooperation in the environmental sector
02/07/2024TN&MTDuring the 16th Vietnam-Korea Environmental Ministers' Meeting, Vietnam's Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Dang Quoc Khanh, and South Korea's Minister of Environment, Han Wha-jin, reached an agreement to implement comprehensive cooperation between the two ministries in the environmental sector.

In the bilateral talks between the two ministers, they discussed various collaborative initiatives, including planning specific climate action cooperation; supporting the development and implementation of legal frameworks for water resources, enhancing the efficiency of water infrastructure usage and operation; promoting biodiversity cooperation; expanding cooperation in green industry and technology; and establishing an environmental office at the Korean Embassy in Vietnam…
Regarding these issues, the two ministers agreed to facilitate Korean experts working with Vietnam’s partners and promoting cooperative projects. These projects include transferring policy experiences, proposing solutions to issues, supporting resources, and training human resources based on the comprehensive strategic partnership between South Korea and Vietnam.

The meeting featured a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony, witnessed by both ministers, covering ministry-level agreements and unit-level agreements in areas of mutual interest and environmental development.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh emphasized that, with a swift and positive working agenda, major directions for future cooperation were provided in the set program, which was completed by the two ministers, aligning with the international context and the priorities of both countries in environmental protection and climate change response.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh expressed hope that the comprehensive cooperation between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam and the Ministry of Environment of South Korea would significantly contribute to the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
Minister Dang Quoc Khanh extended his gratitude to Minister Han Wha-jin and Korean colleagues for organizing the meeting to discuss cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. He urged the agencies of the two ministries to actively and effectively implement the activities agreed upon by the two ministers.

Minister Han Wha-jin also reaffirmed the cooperative will of the two countries and expanded and specified bilateral cooperative projects.
Immediately following the bilateral meeting, both sides signed MoUs on the Environmental Cooperation Implementation Plan and key areas such as water resources, biodiversity, and resource recycling.
Minister Han Wha-jin expressed confidence that through establishing clear strategic goals and specifying cooperative projects, the two countries would advance towards "Doi moi" innovation, a policy introduced in Vietnam in 1986, in environmental cooperation.
Concluding the cooperative program on July 1, Minister Dang Quoc Khanh and the delegation visited the Cheonggyecheon Urban Stream Restoration Project in Seoul.
