Vietnam and the United Kingdom collaborate on climate change response
05/05/2025TN&MTOn May 5, 2025, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Quoc Tri welcomed and held a working session with Rachel Kyte, the UK's Climate Change Envoy. The two sides focused on discussing measures to enhance bilateral cooperation in addressing climate change and supporting Vietnam in updating its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

In his remarks, Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri emphasized that Vietnam considers climate change as one of the three pillars of sustainable development, alongside economic growth and environmental protection. The update of NDC 3.0 demonstrates Vietnam’s strong commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing climate adaptation, in line with the goals of COP29 and the roadmap towards COP30.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri expressed Vietnam’s desire for continued support from the United Kingdom, particularly in developing the carbon credit market and implementing climate cooperation initiatives.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of the 2024 MOU on environmental and climate change cooperation
Ms. Rachel Kyte, the UK Prime Minister’s Climate Envoy, praised Vietnam’s efforts and progress in this area and noted that this is a pivotal moment as Vietnam undergoes a significant policy and action shift in climate change response. She also expressed hope that Vietnam will become a model for developing countries in the green economic transition and committed to supporting the development of the carbon credit market, improving air quality, and engaging businesses in the voluntary carbon market.
Both parties reaffirmed the importance of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) on environmental and climate change cooperation signed in 2024. This MOU serves as a crucial legal framework for implementing strategic cooperation programs, including support for NDC development, carbon credit market operations, air quality improvement, and green technology transfer.
