
Vietnam and Belgium expand cooperation in solid waste management and recycling

Minister-President of Wallonia Adrien Dolimont highlighted the vast potential for both countries to develop sustainable solutions together, leveraging their shared expertise, technology, and innovative approaches.
On the afternoon of April 1, the session took place with the participation of Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Le Cong Thanh, Minister-President of Wallonia Adrien Dolimont, government agencies, development partners, representatives from Vietnamese and Belgian enterprises, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), universities, research institutes, and leading experts in solid waste management. The event was part of the official visit of the King and Queen of Belgium to Vietnam.
Speaking at the session, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh emphasized that the royal visit marked a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two nations. It underscored Belgium's strong commitment to its comprehensive partnership with Vietnam and created new opportunities to enhance collaboration across various fields, particularly in environment, agriculture, and sustainable development.
Regarding Vietnam’s current solid waste management situation, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh noted that in recent years, the country has made remarkable socio-economic progress, laying the foundation for sustainable growth in the future. However, rapid economic expansion and industrialization have intensified environmental challenges, particularly in solid waste management.
"This reality underscores the urgent need to enhance Vietnam’s waste treatment capacity in terms of scale, technology, and management efficiency to meet the demands of sustainable development," he stressed.

In a spirit of open and effective cooperation, Vietnam expressed its desire to further boost collaboration with Belgium in solid waste management and recycling through several key proposals. These include technical assistance and technology transfer in waste treatment, recycling, and waste-to-energy solutions—particularly those successfully implemented in the Wallonia region. Additionally, Vietnam aims to foster research partnerships and professional training while jointly developing pilot projects on circular economy and waste management in selected localities, with the goal of scaling up successful models nationwide.
From the Belgian side, Minister-President of Wallonia Adrien Dolimont highlighted the vast potential for both countries to develop sustainable solutions together, leveraging their shared expertise, technology, and innovative approaches.
With Belgium’s extensive experience in building efficient and sustainable solid waste management systems, Minister Dolimont expressed hope that the cooperation program would unlock new opportunities for technology transfer, policy exchange, and the adoption of best practices. This, in turn, would help Vietnam enhance its waste management and recycling capacity in a modern, environmentally friendly, and sustainable manner, aligning with global development trends.
